What Is Earwax?

• Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural yellow/brown substance secreted by glands in the layer of the ear canal to protect the ear by trapping and removing dust, bacteria, small foreign objects (e.g. insects) from our environment and dead skin.

• Earwax is lubricating inside the ear canal and prevents this from drying out

• Earwax has acidic qualities which creates and maintains a protective antibacterial environment.

Why Does It Build Up?

The ear canal has a self-cleaning mechanism where wax naturally migrates outward, removing debris and dead skin. However, certain factors can increase the likelihood of impacted earwax:

• Age: Degeneration of serum glands leads to drier wax that doesn't migrate easily.

• Hair: Longer, coarser ear hair (common in older men) traps wax.

• Abnormal Ear Canals: Narrow canals or bone overgrowth block wax movement.

• Skin Conditions: Eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis cause dry, scaly skin, leading to blockages.

• Cotton Buds: Push wax deeper, possibly causing pain or discomfort.

• Genetics: Some individuals overproduce wax for unknown genetic reasons.

• Hearing Aids/Earplugs: Block the natural wax migration path.

I recommend using olive oil ear drops 3-4 times a day, for 5 days prior to your ear wax removal appointment. Olive oil ear drops will soften the wax and loosen it away from the ear drum and ear canal walls. This allows ear wax removal to be with more ease.

N.B: Please do not use olive oil or any other types of drops in your ears if you have been told you have a perforated ear drum or ear infection.
